2006 Brewers Association Style Guidelines

Major Style:Ale
Sub-Style Name:Imperial or Double India Pale Ale
Origin:North American
Description:Imperial or Double India Pale Ales have intense hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. Alcohol content is very high and notably evident. They range from golden to amber in color. The style may use any variety of hops. Though the hop character is intense it’s balanced with complex alcohol flavors, moderate to high fruity esters and medium to high malt character. While hop character may be very intense, it may not be harsh in quality. Imperial or Double India Pale Ales have medium-high to full body. Diacetyl should not be perceived.
Alcohol By Weight (by Volume):6.0-8.4% (7.5-10.5%)
Bitterness:65-100
Colour:5-13 (10-26 EBC)
Original Gravity:1.075-1.100 (19.5-23.5 ºPlato)
Final Gravity:1.018-1.028 (5-7 ºPlato)
